A workshop on

Microscopy and Microanalysis for Phase Transformation Studies

May 30 - June 1, 1999

at Hotel Uminonakamichi, Fukuoka, Japan

The Final Announcement

A workshop on "Microscopy and Microanalysis for Phase Transformation Studies" will be held in the suburb of Fukuoka-city in Kyushu with completely relaxed atmosphere, as a satellite meeting of the International Conference on Solid -> Solid Phase Transformations (PTM'99) in Kyoto. The purpose of this workshop is to provide an informal discussion forum on the applications of the state-of-the-art microscopy and microanalysis techniques to the studies of alloy phase transformations.

Scope and Style of the Workshop

The workshop consists of two parts: discussion sessions and a laboratory tour. The former part is scheduled from the evening on May 30 (Sun) through the afternoon on May 31 (Mon). The program is given in the follows. Oral presentations will report experimental studies of microstructural evolution in metallic materials using the following techniques:

In the morning on June 1 (Tuesday), all participants are invited to visit the Laboratory for High Voltage Electron Microscopy at Kyushu University for a laboratory tour. The HVEM laboratory is equipped with various types of advanced TEMs and related devices, such as JEM-1250 HVEM, JEM-4000EX/T with a Gatan imaging filter, JEM-2010FEF with an omega-type imaging filter, Imaging Plate recording system, Focused-Ion-Beam specimen preparation, and so on.

Conference Site

The discussion sessions will be held in

Hotel Uminonanakamichi / Saitozaki 18-25, Higashi-ku, Fukuoka 811-0321, Japan

Phone: +81-(0)92-603-2525, FAX: +81-(0)92-603-2828

which is located inside the Uminonakamichi seaside park. All the participants will stay there from May 30 (Sun) through the morning on June 1 (Tue). The access to the meeting site is guided in the following map. The HVEM Laboratory of Kyushu University (Phone & FAX: +81-(0)92-642-4026) is also located within the same ward. Bus transportation shall be operated to move from the hotel to Kyushu University in the Tuesday morning.

Fee

Since the workshop expenses are mostly due to the hotel charge, the fee should depend on the style of room occupation. After some financial supports by cooperative companies, such as Philips, CAMECA and JEOL, and Kyushu University, it is evaluated around 42,000 JPY (c.a. 350 USD), 33,000 JPY (c.a. 275 USD) or 30,000 JPY (c.a. 250 USD) per person to stay in a single-bed, twin-bed or triple-bed room correspondingly, including meals and accommodation during the workshop. The almost same amount will be charged to a spouse or family members accompanying you. In case you have to leave early or arrive late, the fee will be reduced accordingly.

Check-In and Check-Out

The registration and the payment of workshop fee should be done in the same way as usual check-in and check-out at the hotel reception. Cash in JPY and major credit cards are acceptable on the payment.

Spouse and Family Program

The organizer is not providing a special program for spouses and family. However, the conference site is located in a government-organized park with a full range of facilities including an aquarium (Marine World), tennis courts, cruises, cycling and hiking routes, and so on. Fukuoka is the largest city in Kyushu, and the city itself has a lot of interesting places for visitors from foreign countries. Thus, they will be able to find lots of things to do during the workshop. Some information about Fukuoka-city is available at

Travel Information

1. Access to the meeting site "Hotel Umino-nakamichi"

If you arrive in Hakata (the central train station in Fukuoka) by JR Shinkansen (Inter City Express) from Kyoto, Himeji or another place, you should take the JR local train north-east bound (nobori) on the Kagoshima-line for Mojiko, Shimonoseki or Fukuma. Then change trains at Kashii and get on the Umino-nakamichi-line for Saitozaki. The timetable in the afternoon is shown below. Get off the train at the Umino-nakamichi station. The meeting site is a 4 minute walk from the station. Your Shinkansen ticket can be used on most of the local trains from Hakata to Umino-nakamichi.

Participants who join the group tour to Himeji may arrive in Umino-nakamichi at 17:02, since their ICE Nozomi #11 arrives in Hakata at 16:00. The local trains for Mojiko depart from Hakata at 16:13 and 16:18 and reach Kashii at 16:23 and 16:28.

If you arrive in Fukuoka by airplane, it is also easy to get to the meeting site. You can take the subway from the airport (Fukuoka-kuko) and get to the Hakata station in just a few minutes. Afterwards, you can follow the routes that were mentioned above.

2. Access to the airport or the Hakata station from Kyushu University

The subway is the most convenient way to get to the airport and the Hakata station from Kyushu University after the laboratory tour on June 01. It takes about 30 minutes, including the transfer at the Nakasu-kawabata station.
