A workshop on
Microscopy and Microanalysis for Phase Transformation Studies
May 30 - June 1, 1999
at Hotel Uminonakamichi, Fukuoka, Japan
Last Update: May 11, 1999
Final Circular is now available!
You are invited to participate in an informal workshop on Microscopy
and Microanalysis for Phase Transformation Studies. This is a
satellite workshop of
the International Conference on Solid -> Solid
Phase Transformations (PTM'99) and will be held after the
conference. The purpose of this workshop is to provide an informal
discussion forum on the applications of the state-of-the-art
microscopy and microanalysis techniques to the studies of alloy phase
transformations. In addition, this workshop will provide you with an
opportunity to travel to the western part of Japan after a week stay
in Kyoto for the PTM conference. Unlike the eastern part of Japan
where many foreigners visit, there are a lot of historical tourist
sites in the western part of Japan, including Himeji, Okayama and
Hiroshima. The workshop begins on Sunday evening, and this schedule
will allow you to stop by these places on the way from Kyoto to
Fukuoka.
Scope and Program of the Workshop
Experimental studies of microstructural evolution in metallic
materials using the following techniques:
- conventional and high resolution transmission electron microscopy
- modern analytical TEM techniques with high spatial resolution,
e.g. energy filtering technique
- quantitative electron diffraction techniques on TEM
- new microscopy techniques for phase transformation studies
- conventional and three dimensional atom probe techniques
After the workshop, all participants are invited to the Laboratory
for High Voltage Electron Microscopy at Kyushu University for a
laboratory tour. At the HVEM laboratory you may see various types of
advanced TEMs and related devices, such as JEM-1250 HVEM, JEM-4000EX/T
with a Gatan imaging filter, JEM-2010FEF with an omega-type imaging
filter, Imaging Plate recording system, Focused-Ion-Beam specimen
preparation, and so on.
Tentative Program
Conference Site and Travel Information
The workshop will be held in a seaside resort hotel in Fukuoka from
Sunday evening to Tuesday morning. This schedule will allow you to
stop by some tourist sites on the weekend while traveling from Kyoto
to Fukuoka.
Moving from Kyoto to Fukuoka (Hakata JR station) is very easy and
convenient.
It takes approximately three hours on the JR Shinkansen train.
It is adviced to arrive Hakata before 4:00 pm.
Fee
The registration fee for the workshop will be around 35,000 JPY*
(c.a. 300 USD). This includes meals and accommodation during the
workshop. If a spouse or family members are accompanying you,
approximately the same amount will be charged to them, since most of
the registration fee is the hotel charge. In case you have to leave
early or arrive late, the fee will be reduced accordingly. No
financial support will be provided to the participants.
* This is
based on sharing a hotel room with 2 persons. Additional fee will be
charged for single occupancy of a room.
Spouse and Family Program
The organizer is not providing a special program for spouses and
family. However, the conference site is located in the Uminonakamichi
seaside park with a full range of facilities including an aquarium,
tennis courts, cruises, cycling and hiking routes, and so on. Fukuoka
is the largest city in Kyushu, and the city itself has a lot of
interesting places for visitors from foreign countries. Thus, they
will be able to find lots of things to do during the workshop.
